Implementing programmatic assessment transforms supervisor attitudes: An explanatory sequential mixed methods study

Introduction Programmatic assessment (PA) is an increasingly popular approach to competency-based (CBA), yet evaluation evidence limited. This study aimed identify and explore supervisor attitudes before after implementing a novel PA using sequential explanatory mixed methods design. In phase one, survey was used perspectives on work-based placements, CBA. Survey results were then applied develop focus group questions further attitudes.Results found improve supervisor-student relationships by removing high-stakes decisions creating greater capacity for feedback teaching, leading productive learning environment. Assessment perceived as important role supervisors wanted feel valued heard within PA. Trust conceptualised triad between supervisor, student university, enabled engage with which success. Supervisor of experiential often supported students, highlighting the need hands-on training.Conclusion Participants reported high level agreement CBA principles may have made them amenable educational change. Further research needed experience all stakeholders understand how worldviews culture influence initiatives.
